WHAT IS NC1701?
Nebula Systems has created the first dedicated controller for use in Telematic embedded systems – NC1701. It uniquely enables companies in the Connected Car space to access any vehicle’s OEM data without requiring previous knowledge of vehicle ECU communication protocols.
Built on 25 years worth of automotive data engineering expertise NC1701, when embedded into a telematic device, completely eliminates the need for any costly and time consuming vehicle reverse engineering, and leaves our clients free to concentrate on monetizing their business models.
When utilised in a partner’s telematic device, whether an OBD dongle or black-box unit, and connected to the CAN Bus, NC1701 handles all vehicle communications via OEM proprietary CAN protocols covering cars from 2008 onward (cars with OBD2 J1979 protocol are covered from 2001 (EU) & 1996 (US)).
The NC1701 chipset is based on an advanced PIC32MZ microcontroller from Microchip Technology Inc., world leaders in silicon chip devices. It has a 9mm x 9mm footprint with 124 pins. More details can be found HERE

These are the three different service levels we currently provide via our NC1701 chipset.
All communications with our chip are secure and we ensure vehicle safety by only allowing data to be read when it is safe to do so.

Access OEM parameter data like:

- Tyre Pressure info
- Door status
- Vehicle occupancy

SERVICE LEVEL 2
Vehicle Health Check:
Read all OEM Data Trouble Codes (DTCs) from across all ECUs in a vehicle, in a single sweep.
NC1701 chip retrieves OEM trouble codes and MECH5 APIs can be used for code translation.
FULL REMOTE DIAGNOSTICS
SERVICE LEVEL 3
Full Remote Scantool:
NC1701 can be connected dynamically with the MECH5 diagnostic platform to allow full remote diagnostics.
It’s like standing next to the car with a powerful scan-tool plugged in!
The following features are all included as standard within our NC1701 base firmware.
Our three service levels: OEM PIDs, OEM DTCs and Remote Diagnostics can then be added in addition to these standard capabilities.
STANDARD OBD2 COMMANDS
NC1701 is supplied fully compatible with all OBD2 Standard Protocols.
This means that even without a Configuration File, NC1701 can read all generic OBD2 (SAE J1979) PIDs and DTCs
OEM VIN READING
NC1701 provides OEM VIN reading capability. This means you now have the potential to read VINs when not available through standard OBDII requests.
ADVANCED IGNITION DETECTION
NC1701 overcomes many ignition detection issues faced when using an “ordinary” telematic OBD Dongle.
By using MECH5 to provide configuration it is able to read Ignition status from multiple sources providing further options for Virtual Ignition Detection.
ADVANCED LOW POWER MODES
NC1701 can be configured to enter “power saving mode” and can “wake up” using different sources:
- Battery voltage change
- CAN bus activity
- Advanced ignition sense signal
Layered security prevents any unauthorised access to the vehicle OBD by embedding encrypted scripts within the NC1701 itself upon configuration, thereby preventing any OBD hacking
FULLY MULTIPLEXED DESIGN
NC1701 is capable of handling multiple CAN buses and ISO lines, making it compatible with more vehicle models and ECUs than standard offerings.
NOTE: The NC1701 needs to be embedded using the suggested reference design for some of these features to work properly.
LIVE FIRMWARE UPDATES
The NC1701 firmware can be updated whilst still in use in normal operation mode. Once the download procedure has finished (and it’s safe for the host to do so), the switching to the new firmware takes less than 250 ms making the downtime very short.
